That's besides the point. There is no specific need to differentiate between "platinum" and "gold."

Besides, how logical is it for 999 gold pieces to suddenly become 1 platinum piece with the addition of a single gold piece? This added a layer of confusion that wasn't required.

It's a convenience "feature" that had no reason to be added. It doesn't streamline anything and leads to mistakes like this. Is typing "32500" that much of a hassle vs. typing "32" into one field, and then typing "500" into another?

If you like the convenience of being able to single-click for 1000 gold (excuse me, 1 platinum), then why not just make a "1000 gold" button that adds to the running total.

And no, I've never been scammed so these aren't the bitter words of someone who lost their fortune in in-game money. I always double, triple check trades. It just always seemed like an unnecessary part of trading.

If you loose a friend over 60K virtual money, than something IS wrong in this world.
Loosing a friend over this means: he's never been a friend.
True friends don't get lost because of a loss of 60K virtual gold.

Get real guys. Get a life!

Here's a look on the legal side as it would present itself in real-world germany.

If 2 sides agree on a contract, and one side makes an obvious mistake (and selling a sigil for 1/1000 of the discussed amount definately is an obvious mistake) this contract can be reversed.
Or at least it can be modifyed so that 60G transfer into 60K.

That procedure requires, of course, certain things.
1) a law inside the game
The only "law" is the EULA, and if that doesn't cover this, you're probably up the creek.
2) some means of enforcement to make sure that you get what's legaly yours

And you have to make sure the buyer of that sigil still has a valid account.
He could've passed the sigil on to somebody else already, deleting his character and/or account.

And I'm not sure how detailed aNet protocolls activities like that.

Large parts of this story don't make sense to me..
I don't know how he got his brother's Sigil. Something about " wanting to surprise him " probably because the price went up pretty fast and there was a big profit to be had.

What parts of this story do you not understand ? Tell me and i'll do my best to clear them up to you :-)

Correct ;-)

Maybe it was my naivity that made me lose the Sigil, but it's simply because it's something I would NEVER do ! I've overpriced some of the stuff i sold sometimes ( like charging 4 k for a max dam fierey dragon sword that i bought for 2k a day earlier... ) but i never scammed anybody into giving their stuff for free. If people want to pay to much for an item, it's their choise ( as long as you don't go to great lenghts to convince them to buy something at 10 times the real valua, off course. There are limits... ) but doing this kind of scam is simply stealing, and leaves a very sour player.

And 60 k IS a lot of money, until last week I have never passed that magical 9k limit where you get a digit extra. Off course, i will make up for the loss in a while, but it's still demoralising, because it will take a lot of work to make that much if you havn't even ascended yet like i have.

I wonder if i'll get a reply from that e-mail.

The charr carving was mine, i give it with the Sigil as a GIFT !

lol so basically i give him a free sigil AND my most beautiful charr carving. It was a really nice one, depicting little charr kids dancing on the naked corpse of Prince Rurik....

Allso : please don't ask me to get a life. I have a beautiful life. It's not like a most my only friend over this, but i HAVE lost the only player in GW that i could really trust. Trust enough to share all of our stuff like that....

So you are going to pay your (ex)friend back, right? He's the one who paid 40K for the sigil. So the least thing you could do is to compensate him for his loss.
The way this looks it's been your fault that you ended up with 60G instead of 60K.

Why does friendship always end when money starts?

It's a cynical little world, Joerii. You can't survive on romanticism alone.

If you confuse honor with cynicism, you're on the right path.

I know a lot of GW players are not familiar with the word "honor" and if they are, they think it's crap.
So be it.

Fact is: Your friend trusted you with a sigil worth 40K and more, and you let him/her down.
S/he probably thinks about you just the way you do think about that scammer.

I'm not confusing honor with cynicism, but i was expecting some sypathy for being fooled the way I was. Instead your telling me I am as much to blame as the scammer. Making me feel bad, because I must admit there is some truth in it.

Sharing the losses has nothing to do with honor, in my book. Thats just what business partners do... share profit, that means you allso share the losses. Offcourse i offered him to pay him 20k as soon as i can get it ( meaning a week or so if i work my dutch but off ) but he was so shocked he only told me " It was nice knowing you " and logged off.

Honor is a word that's misused more then it's used right. Lets keep this simple.

When I read "cynical" it sounded to me as if you were not even considering compensating your friends. Sorry, if I got that wrong.

What worries me is that in the original posting you referr to your gaming buddy as a friend. Now it's a business partner. I do know that business partners can be friends, but it still as a strange ring to it.

So, if your ex business-partner refuses to be compensated: his/her fault. At least you made the gesture.

I still believe that standing up to your mistakes, telling the truth, trying to undo the wrong things that have been done, has got a lot to do with honor.

A lot of people wouldn't even consider sharing the losses. It's a good thing that you offered your friend to pay him/her back.

And: you do have my sympathy!

Some people would think that it's just a game.. get over it.. and in fact it is just a game.. but it is also an escape.. another world so to speak. This world isn't perfect or a utopia ... and people try to make games exactly that.. or at least something balanced to keep you interested in playing. There are times such as these in which our inperfect world infultrates our balanced utopia and it's a shock to the system. So the only thing i can think of is to do what you would do in the real world.. when something goes wrong and it's out of your control.. "Why do we fall Bruce?" "So we can learn to pick ourselves up" - Batman Begins :P it felt appropriate.
